Eisai Terminates E2007 as Treatment for Parkinson's
Apr 11 2008
Eisai Co., maker of Aricept, the world's best-selling drug for Alzheimer's, will stop the development of its experimental Parkinson's disease treatment.
Eisai will focus on the development of E2007 for other indications, including epilepsy and pain. Eisai made the announcement in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Eisai said in October that it would delay a request for U.S. approval of its Parkinson's disease treatment until early 2009, a year later than planned, after one of three late-stage studies showed it was no more effective than a placebo. Shares fell to an eight-week low the next day.
The second study also didn't show benefit, Eisai said today.
Eisai joins Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. in ending patient studies of potential successors to blockbuster drugs for which patent protection expires in the next three years. Eisai seeks to reduce reliance on Aricept, which accounted for almost 40 percent of its revenue, before it faces competition from generics in 2010.
Eisai is preparing to start as early as this month the third and last stage of epilepsy patient testing generally required for regulatory review and plans to file for marketing approval of the drug, generically known as perampanel, in the year that begins April 2012.
The drugmaker completed enrolling patients for a mid-stage study in pain relief among diabetics in March and expects results in September.
The announcement was made after the close of trading in Tokyo. Eisai rose 60 yen, or 1.7 percent, to 3,570 yen.
