Participant Stories
“I participate because it is the right thing to do, for myself, for my children, and for the millions of people who have Parkinson’s disease. Without participation there will be no cure.” –Mike, Diagnosed 7 years

Integrated Exercise: Balance Work to Improve Parkinson’s Postural Stability
Official Study Title: Integrated Exercise: Balance Work to Improve Parkinson Postural Stability
Sponsor: Mazer Foundation
Clinicaltrials.gov ID:
Study ID: 076-11
Summary
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of balance work on postural stability of participants diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Multiple exercise interventions have been investigated for PD postural instability Postural InstabilityImpaired balance and coordination often causing patients to lean forward or backward and to fall easily. and risk of falls. These interventions including individual range of motion, weight bearing, group flexibility exercise, gait GaitWay of walking, which is diminished in people with Parkinson’s who tend to shuffle their feet, take too short steps, and not swing one or both arms. and step training, dance, tai chi Tai chiRhythmic patterns of gentle, flowing movements coordinated with breathing. Described as "meditation in motion," Tai chi promotes serenity, connecting the mind and body, stress reduction, and improvements to overall health. Tai chi is generally safe for people of all ages and levels of fitness. and Qi Gong. Data on demographics, disease stage, and medications will be obtained. Quality of life and risk of falls scores will be evaluated pre- and post- balance work program to ascertain if this intervention has a significant effect. The hypothesis tested in this study is that people with PD who participate in balance work will have better postural stability and fewer falls.
