Investigation of Risk Factors for Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease

Official Study Title: Consortium On Risk for Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease  Parkinson's DiseaseA chronic, slowly progressive disease of the nervous system characterized by the combination of tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and stooped posture, among other symptoms. (CORE PD)
Sponsor: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke  National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)A branch of the National Institutes of Health whose research concentrates on the brain and conditions that result in brain function irregularities. The NINDS funds much of the research on Parkinson's disease. Internet address: http://www.ninds.nih.gov (NINDS)
Clinicaltrials.gov ID: NCT00104585
Study ID: R01NS036630

Summary

The purpose of this study is to investigate genetic  GeneticReferring to a condition that is caused by a person's genes (heredity). and environmental risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing Parkinson's disease at or before age 50. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common brain disorder among people over 50. However, about 10 percent of people with PD are reported to develop symptoms at or before the age of 50. These people are said to have early-onset Parkinson's disease. Participation in the study involves a blood draw, answering questionnaires on family and medical history, and a neurological examination. In addition, participants may be contacted in the future and asked to participate in a more detailed interview. At that time, study investigators will also ask participants for permission to contact family members to invite them to participate in the study. Scientists hope this study will increase the current knowledge of PD and that the identification of factors that cause PD will lead to better diagnosis and treatment.
