Summary

The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy  EfficacyThe extent to which a specific intervention, procedure, or regimen produces a beneficial result under ideal conditions. of computerized functional balance training and traditional exercise programs for a specialized population of individuals with Parkinson's disease.  Parkinson's DiseaseA chronic, slowly progressive disease of the nervous system characterized by the combination of tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and stooped posture, among other symptoms. Exercise has been shown to benefit persons with PD, but many questions remain unanswered regarding the type and intensity of exercise programs. Volunteers will receive pre-training, 10 training sessions and two post-training sessions. Training will consist of balance and functional activities. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the computerized or traditional training group. All sessions will be conducted by senior physical therapists. This study has been thoroughly reviewed and approved by the Baystate Medical Center Institutional Review Board.  Institutional Review BoardA committee of physicians, statisticians, researchers, community advocates, and others chosen by an institution to initially approve and periodically review research projects involving human participants. Federal law requires this to ensure protection of participants’ safety, rights and welfare.

Time Commitment

  • Less than six months
  • One pre-training session, ten daily training sessions (over 2 weeks), two post-training sessions

Eligibility

  • Minimum Age: 40
  • Maximum Age: 75
  • Gender(s) Accepted: Either

Inclusion Criteria

  • Demonstrate visual acuity of 20/20 (with correction as necessary)
  • Comfortable with walking at least 50 feet with or without assistive devices
  • State commitment to attend pre-test, post-test and 10 training sessions (The 10 training sessions will be conducted over a period of two weeks)

Exclusion Criteria

  • History of dizziness
  • Certain medical conditions and co-morbidities
